SAKANAQUARIUM 2015-2016 "NF Records launch tour" BD/DVD Sales

sakanaction finally had a new release in awhile in the form of SAKANAQUARIUM 2015-2016. How well did it do on the charts?

Here are the respective weekly ranks:
DVD Overall Chart
Blu-ray Overall Chart

Besides a barrage of anime video releases coming out at the same time, there was really no one who could be competition for sakanaction last week so they took the top spots on the music chart.

Thanks to the DVD and BD both taking the first spot on the Music video release charts, the sales numbers were also reported by Oricon.

Shin-Takarajima chart performance

sakanaction's 11th single, Shin-Takarajima, came in at 9th place on the Oricon Weekly Charts in its first week, selling 18,909 copies.

This is one of the lower-charting singles that sakanaction have released. However, the sales are actually not too different from their previous single. The week had a fair bit of competition, resulting in 9th place.

Despite the band's long break, they have managed to keep their sales somewhat steady. The single was helped by promotion from the "Bakuman" film tie-up, which debuted at the top of the box office. It was also released in 3 different versions, a rarity for sakanaction.

sakanaction will perform the song on TV this Saturday on music program CDTV.

"Natsukashii Tsuki wa Atarashii Tsuki" chart performance

sakanaction's latest release, "Natsukashii Tsuki wa Atarashii Tsuki ~Coupling&Remix works~", is the band's first compilation album and first album in about 1 and a half years. So how did the album fare on the Oricon charts?

They achieved #5 on the Oricon Weekly Album Charts, with 20,983 copies sold! It's not an amazing feat, but not too shabby either. The album started strong on the charts with a #2 on the first and second day, but some of the other competition this week were around the same level and ultimately overtook sakanaction in sales.

Sayonara wa Emotion/Hasu no Hana chart performance

sakanaction's 10th single, Sayonara wa Emotion/Hasu no Hana, ranked in at number 4 on the Oricon Weekly Charts in its first week.

Sales took a slight dip from previous single Goodbye/Eureka, with a difference of 1557 copies. Little change to ranking was seen throughout the week, and sakanaction would have still been in the same spot even with the sales of their strongest selling single, Music.

The week's top 2 places were taken by releases that were related to the Youkai Watch anime that has reached phenomenal heights of popularity with young children, and in 3rd place was a solo release from EXILE ATSUSHI, member of supergroup EXILE.

Promotions this time round on TV were performances on Music Station and LIVE MONSTER. Although Hasu no Hana had a strong tie-up with the movie Kinkyori Renai (which held #1 in Japan's box office for three weeks), the movie version of the song was released via digital distribution such as iTunes Japan.

SAKANATRIBE 2014 -LIVE AT TOKYO DOME CITY HALL- DVD/BD Sales

One Oricon week has passed since the release of SAKANATRIBE 2014 -LIVE AT TOKYO DOME CITY HALL-, so let's check out how it performed on the Oricon Charts!

The past week's releases included Arashi, AK-69 and Dempagumi Inc., which provided some competition.

However, sakanaction managed decently despite the hiccup along the way (the BD version's extra content had its audio/video sync off and fans who bought the BD had to send in proof of purchases to Victor Music to get a replacement BD in late August).

Here are the respective weekly ranks:
DVD (Overall) Chart
DVD (Music) Chart
Blu-ray Chart

If you remember, the DVD version was released in 2 parts/versions, one being the Standard Edition and the other being the TEAM SAKANACTION Edition. They were counted together on the DVD charts.

Oricon doesn't provide the sales numbers for DVDs and Blu-ray discs publicly, but I was able to pick up the weekly total from subscribers of Oricon.

"Goodbye/Eureka" chart performance and sales

sakanaction's 9th single, Goodbye/Eureka, achieved the number 2 ranking on Oricon Weekly Charts for the week of 13 to 19 January.

The single ranked at either 2nd or 3rd place throughout the week. The band managed performances on Music Station and CDTV, increasing promotion of the song to TV viewers.

This is the highest that sakanaction has ever ranked for a single, beating Aruku Around's 3rd place back in 2010. However, its sales are less than the previous two singles, Music and Yoru no Odoriko. This was possible due to the relatively weak music releases for the week, with the exception of popular idol group Kanjani8 who firmly held the first place.

Though maybe a bit of a surprise coming after their participation at Kouhaku Utagassen, there are plausible explanations. For Music, the price was much cheaper at 500 yen, which of course resulted in better sales. Let's not forget tie-ups - Music had TV drama "dinner" while Yoru no Odoriko had a Mode School CM. In contrast, Eureka has a tie-up with "Judge!", a movie that was just barely released, and has less chance to sink into the general public.

Lastly, Goodbye/Eureka being a double A-side single actually may have less appeal to a number of fans. It means that an upcoming album will likely contain both A-side tracks, so there is less of a pressing reason to get the single - the only exclusive track is a remix of a song we have gotten before. Therefore, even though they sold less this time, it should not be much of a concern. Their digital sales remain strong, with Goodbye topping iTunes Japan song downloads for the week.

"sakanaction" chart performance and sales

sakanaction's self-titled 6th album has clinched the top spot on Oricon Weekly Charts for the first time since the band started! For the week of 11 March to 17 March, it has taken first place for album sales.

Congratulations to sakanaction! This is their best selling release to date, and also their highest ranking, breaking the record of 2011's DocumentaLy which got a 2nd place ranking. It's also a whopping increase of 78% in sales as compared to DocumentaLy, no doubt helped along by better exposure and more tie-ups this time round. Also, there wasn't very strong competition for the week.

By the way, single-wise, Aruku Around still remains their highest ranking single with a 3rd place ranking in weekly charts.

See below for the comparison charts.

"Music" chart performance and sales

sakanaction's latest single, Music, achieved the number 4 ranking on Oricon Weekly Charts for the week of 21 to 27 January.

The single ranked at 3rd place for most of the week, with its peak on the daily charts being 2nd place. There was no performance on television music programs this time, and the only promotion it had was being the theme song of Fuji TV's Sunday primetime drama "dinner". Its lower price tag of 500 yen this time may also have helped.

Although they did not manage to beat the chart position "Aruku Around" achieved back in 2010, "Music" managed to outsell "Yoru no Odoriko" for first week reported sales, meaning "Music" is now their best selling single. Congrats to team sakanaction!

Yoru no Odoriko sales

sakanaction's latest and 7th single Yoru no Odoriko clinched 5th spot on the Oricon Weekly Charts for the week of 27 Aug to 2 Sep.

It started with them ranking 6th place on the first day, and then moving up and down slightly throughout the week, with a peak position of #3 on the 5th day (which happened to be a day after their Music Station performance).

They also achieved their highest ever first week sales for a single with 30,616 reported copies sold. Many congratulations to the band and Team Sakanaction!

Boku to Hana Chart Performance

First week rank and sales on Oricon Weekly Chart

Congratulations to Sakanaction for a good first week in sales for their latest single, Boku to Hana!

There wasn't any television performances this time round, whereas for Bach, there was a Music Station performance which helped to boost sales. However, Boku to Hana is the first time Sakanaction did a tie-up with a drama series, which most certainly gave more exposure to the band. But since Sakanaction's popularity was already on the rise, it's difficult to tell how much influence the drama had.

Below is a comparison chart of ranks and sales on Oricon for reference.

SAKANAQUARIUM 2011 DocumentaLy BD/DVD Chart Rankings

Just a quick roundup of how the DVD and BD did on the Oricon Charts!

Unfortunately, Oricon doesn't provide hard numbers for amount of copies sold when it comes the DVDs and Blu-ray discs, but you can get a general idea of how it's selling by looking at the ranking.

DocumentaLy ranks on Oricon's Yearly Album Chart 2011

Oricon revealed the Top 100 charts for the year of 2011 yesterday. Sakanaction's 5th album "DocumentaLy" ranked at 81st place on the album charts!

This is a great achievement for the band as I believe it is the first time they've made it to the Top 100 rankings of Oricon's Yearly Charts.

"DocumentaLy" sold well but I kept my fingers crossed the entire time I was looking through the charts for it. When I finally saw it on the last page, I was overjoyed. I am just so happy for them!

Sakanaction frontman Yamaguchi Ichiro is slowly but surely fulfilling his aim of selling 100,000 copies of an album. "DocumentaLy" may not be it, with reported sales of around 80,000 copies, but with their ever expanding popularity, I am sure they will achieve that number soon, and probably even get a #1 rank on weekly charts!

Congratulations to all the amazing members of Sakanaction and may they continue to strive on!

SAKANARCHIVE First Day Ranking

Today was the official release date for the SAKANARCHIVE DVD!

If you guys haven't bought your copy yet, what are you waiting for?

I'm personally still waiting for my copy to arrive in the mail, but until then let's check out the Oricon Ranking for this release...

Congrats to Sakanaction for making it to #8 on the Oricon daily DVD combined ranking chart!

Although this number seems low compared to the #2 that DocumentaLy got, bear in mind that usually only actual fans would buy the DVD of an artist, unlike albums where people who just like the songs will buy. Besides, there is stiff competition from other categories when it comes to DVD charts, like anime and movie DVDs. In just the DVD(Music) ranking chart and not the combined one, SAKANARCHIVE attained a #5 ranking.

Looking forward to receiving my copy soon and watching the Document PV. Judging by reactions on 2ch it should be pretty impactful (in a positive way).
